Today's lesson
1. Reading Street story: Letters Home from Yosemite p.144-163
- Skim and scan through the story for main ideas and important facts:
- Yosemite Park is America's third national park
- The Americans started to protect/preserve it in 1864.
- President Lincoln signed the Yosemite Grant to make it a national park.
- Scottish naturalist - John Muir was the 1st to visit Yosemite, he convinced the US government to preserve it.
- Native American - Miwok Indians lived in Yosemite about 7000 - 10000 years ago.
- 94% of Yosemite is kept as wilderness - people can only reach by foot or horseback.
- Badger Pass is California's 1st ski spot.
- More than half of America's highest waterfalls are in Yosemite.
- The prettiest is Bridalveil Fall.
- Grizzly Giant is the oldest sequoia about 2700 years old and 300 feet tall.
- Some of the wildlife are: black bear (about 300-500 pounds), mule deer, bobcats, coyotes.....and steller's jay.
- El Capitan is the biggest single block of granite on Earth.
- Yosemite Falls are the highest waterfalls in North America, it is 13 times higher than Niagara Falls.
