History of the story Lewis and Clark and Me ~ the Louisiana Purchase

The Louisiana Purchase was a large land deal between the United States and France in 1803. President Thomas Jefferson bought this land to help the U.S. grow. After the purchase, he sent Meriwether Lewis and William Clark on an expedition to explore the new territory west of the Mississippi River.

In Lewis and Clark and Me, the story follows Seaman, a big Newfoundland dog, who traveled with Lewis on this journey. Seaman helped the men by swimming, hunting, and protecting them. The expedition was important because it mapped new lands, met Native American tribes, and helped the U.S. understand the West.

This connection shows how Seaman played a small but important role in American history, as he was part of one of the most famous journeys in the U.S.

1.   Lewis and Clark and Me was a story told by a dog named Seaman.

2.   “Lewis walked along the dock with a large stride” when he saw Seaman for the first time.

3.   “Need a dog, sir?” Seaman’s owner asked, and Lewis bought him for twenty dollars.

4.   “I have always loved the water,” so Seaman was excited to travel on the Ohio River.

5.   One day, Seaman saw “hundreds of squirrels” swimming across the river.

6.   Lewis told him, “Fetch us a squirrel,” and Seaman jumped into the water to catch them.

7.   When they met Native Americans, one of them pointed at Seaman and said, “Bear.”

8.   Lewis smiled and said, “I guess he does look like a bear.”

9.   A Native American offered “three beaver skins for my dog,” but Lewis said, “No trade.”

10.     Seaman knew that “nothing could separate” him from Lewis, and they stayed together on their adventure.
