 Today's lesson 

1.  Read and discuss Reading Street p.52-67 Lewis and Clark and Me. 

2. Review elements of story: Try to think of the following when you read a story: 

    genre

    characters

    setting (place and time)

    main idea 

    author's purpose: RWN p.51. to entertain (make readers happy/have fun), to inform (give info/facts to the readers), to persuade (to make the readers agree / to do something)

    Always read the title: the title may give you a general idea of the paragraph you are to read 

 3. Skim / scan: RWN p.58-59

    to skim: to quickly find out the main idea; to read the first and last paragraph or sentences to help you identify the main idea. 

    to scan is to find the correct answer from the passage. You can read the questions then "scan" for the key words from the whole passage. 

    pay attention to the NUMBER in a passage, they are usually important.
