    v/v words: the/ory, soci/ety. 

    manufacturing is a gerund ~ noun! 

    medicine: do not use the verb "eat". We use "take".  Uncountable: no "s" medicines

                     I take medicine when I am sick. 

                     He took some medicine after lunch because he got a headache. 

3. Reading Street story: The Man Who Named Clouds 


  •      Review genre "biography": a story about a person's life. You may find the following information: 

              full name / date of birth /birthplace/family/ childhood/ schooling/ events happened at different                stages of life/ things the person accomplished  or made him or her famous / place lived/ date                    and place he or she died 

  •         Summary of the story 

1.   Luke Howard grew up in the busy city of London, England, where he loved to watch the sky and wonder about the shapes of clouds.

2.   When Luke was eight years old, he went to a Quaker boarding school, where he studied Latin, science, and the natural world.

3.   At the age of ten, Luke began keeping a weather journal, carefully recording the weather conditions twice every day.

4.   Luke’s father wanted him to learn a useful trade, so he sent Luke to work in a chemist shop where medicines were made and sold.

5.   Even though Luke worked long hours in the chemist shop, he never lost his passion for studying the weather and observing clouds.

6.   Luke used important weather tools like a thermometer to measure temperature, a weather vane to find wind direction, and a barometer to check air pressure.

7.   He noticed that clouds had many different shapes, but it was difficult for people to describe them clearly without using special names.

8.   Luke decided to use Latin words for naming clouds because Latin was a language understood by scientists from many different countries.

9.   He named three main types of clouds: Cirrus, meaning a curl of hair; Cumulus, meaning a heap; and Stratus, meaning a layer.

10.Luke shared his ideas about cloud naming at a science club called the Askesian

     Society, and his essay was published in 1803 in the Philosophical Magazine.

11. Luke married a woman named Mariabella, and they had eight children while he

     continued his work in science and weather study.

   12. Luke Howard lived a long and happy life, and when he died in 1864 at the age of

ninety-one, his cloud-naming system was already famous around the world.
