Stegosaurus
(Sample Writing)
Stegosaurus
was a plant-eating dinosaur that lived
during the Jurassic period, about 155 million years ago. Its name means “roofed lizard” because of the large bony plates on its back. Scientists believe
it used its spikes and plates to protect itself from
predators like Allosaurus. Fossils show that Stegosaurus lived in North America and Europe, in forests and plains.
Stegosaurus
was about 9 meters (30 feet) long and weighed over 5,000 kilograms (11,000 pounds). It
had 17 big plates on its back, which may
have been used for defense or controlling body
temperature. Its head was small with weak teeth, so it could only eat
soft plants. It had a strong tail with four sharp
spikes, called a Thagomizer, which helped defend it from enemies.
Stegosaurus
was a herbivore, meaning it ate plants like ferns and
bushes. Since it had a short neck, it could only eat plants close
to the ground. Scientists think it lived in small
groups to stay safe. Even though it
was big, Stegosaurus was slow and had a small brain—only the size of
a walnut!
One
fun fact about Stegosaurus is that it could swing
its spiked tail very fast to protect itself. Some scientists also
believe that its back plates changed color to scare enemies. I like Stegosaurus because it had a
cool spiky tail and looked strong!
